Your dose may need to be reduced slowly over a few weeks or months. If you’ve been taking corticosteroids for a while, you may also need tests before you stop taking them. These will make sure that your adrenal glands are still working properly. It’s sometimes necessary for steroid tablets to be taken for longer periods.

  • Steroids are a man-made version of chemicals, known as hormones, that are made naturally in the human body.
  • If you have any of these conditions, the person treating you will need to make sure the steroids aren’t making the condition worse.
  • In one study of healthy men, being deprived of just two hours sleep caused them to crave sugar and eat more of it.
  • I was put on strong steroids, which made me feel hungry all the time, and I started to gain weight.

In the UK, live vaccines include rubella, mumps, measles, BCG, yellow fever and the shingles vaccine (Zostavax). Steroids can cause severe heart problems if you have had a recent heart attack. Steroids can increase the number of white blood cells in your blood.

Obviously, I knew to bring a book or my Kindle or whatever it was to keep me occupied. I knew to bring some sandwiches with me, because I had checked, you know, “Can one eat whilst doing it? ” “Oh, yes.” And I knew hospital sandwiches weren’t something to rely on, even if they were offered, which they weren’t.

Mental health risks associated with anabolic steroids

If you do need a steroid card, make sure you always carry it with you. If you lose it, you can get a replacement from your pharmacy or GP. If you want to check that your medicines are safe to take with your medication, ask your Pharmacist or GP. If you have troublesome side effects, don’t stop taking your medication until your doctor says it’s safe to do so.

The side effects may be reduced by lowering the dose of steroids. If you have indigestion or pain in your tummy, let your nurse or doctor know. You may get some of the side effects we mention, but you are unlikely to get all of them. If you are also having treatment with other cancer drugs, you may have some side effects that we have not listed here.

Most IPED are self-prescribed, bought on the black market or from a dealer in the gym. The most commonly used IPED are anabolic steroids and are taken mostly by men, to increase their muscle size and strength.
